Character Name: Riku Canon: Kingdom Hearts Age: 17 Gender: male
Canon Point: post KH3D: Dream Drop Distance History:right here Personality:
“I know it’s somewhere out there – the strength that I need.” “Strength for what?” “To protect the things that matter. You know, like my friends.”
To put it simply, Riku is pretty much the opposite of Sora: where Sora is cheerful and optimistic, Riku leans more towards blunt and realistic. That being said, Riku isn't really as stand-offish as people make him out to be - he just has a more practical way of interpreting things. Though Riku does have his reasons for being more aloof and quieter than he used to be back when he was 15, where he was a lot more cocky and a lot more competitive. Despite that, ever since they were kids Sora and Riku had one thing in common: loyalty and the desire to protect the people and things they care about. But it was Riku's competitive streak that made him lose sight of it, becoming an easy target for Maleficent to manipulate. She played up his jealousy and turned it into rage, making him the prime candidate for Ansem's vessel.
"That was my... my dark side. I gave in to the darkness once. And ever since, it’s chased me around in one form or another. The Seeker of Darkness who stole my body... a puppet replica of the shadows in my heart... and now, I’m facing me."
After the events in the first game, Riku had multiple realizations. Coming to terms with the fact that he had let his heart become weak by giving in to the darkness was the biggest one, which became the catalyst for the turning point in his personality. From this realization, he came to the conclusion that if he couldn't get rid of the darkness in his heart, he would to use it without turning from the light like before. He matured immensely from these realizations and after leaving the past behind him when he left Castle Oblivion, he also left behind a lot of his former traits. They were substituted for a solemn demeanor that almost seemed jaded and much too old for a sixteen (soon to be seventeen) year old boy. But Riku had seen and learned way more than any boy his age could, had experienced dangers and life-altering situations that probably no one his age could understand, and in the end, it makes sense. It's because of what he's experienced that make him who he is and he realizes that it's not just about himself or independence anymore - it's about protecting what is precious and what's important; something that he had valued very much before he lost his way.
"'Cause I'm not a total sap like you."
However, later in the game, we still see glimpses of Riku's "younger" personality through his sense of humor. While warning the Emperor in the Land of Dragons about the Nobodies and Heartless, he reassures them saying that three "wise guys" (Sora, Donald, and Goofy) will be there soon to defend the palace. He still teases Sora, though not as frequently, calling him a sap and telling him to get a hold of himself, and even cracks a joke about Donald and Goofy's level of intelligence. The competitive edge isn't there anymore, and there's a difference between the way Riku used to tease him then compared to now.
“Walking that path changed me. I’m not sure if I’m ready to wield a keyblade. Maybe I do need to be tested.”
Though Riku has grown up a lot, he still expresses much remorse and guilt for the things he'd done in the past. He admits to Sora that he didn't want to be found when Sora went to search for him, saying that he didn't want anyone to see him in his state. He almost refuses to go back home with Sora and Kairi, not knowing how to face everyone after everything that had happened. Yet this really proves how much Riku has matured since the beginning of Kingdom Hearts and despite the fact that he focuses much on repentance, it's amazing to see (and experience indirectly) the things that has happened to him and knowing that he survived it all. Riku changes the most out of everyone in the game, and lot of his personality is made up of multiple layers.
"Kn-Knight? You've got the wrong idea."
In the end, Riku is honestly... an honestly good guy. He goes out of his way to help others and truly cares deeply for his friends. He won't ever betray you unless it's honestly for your own good and though you might get really pissed off at him then, when you finally figure it out, you'll probably be feeling the opposite. Depending on the situation, he can be rather painfully blunt, or really serious when giving advice and usually, it's good advice that he's gained through his experiences. Riku is still a teenager (even though he seems a lot more mature than one), however, and mostly covers up his teenage instincts/urges with silences and deep thinking. He's not so much a loner as he just doesn't want to be a burden to his friends or anyone, even though his friends are just as loyal to him as he is.
Riku, being a keyblade wielder, has the ability to wield a keyblade. With it, he can open locks of a wide variety and can also use it to cast elemental spells (i.e.: fire, blizzard, thunder, cure, etc). The fact that he has power over darkness also allows him to summon portals that he can use as a means of transportation, however, since I'm taking him from post game, he would not be able to use this anymore.
It is known that Riku is pretty strong and pretty fast. Ever since they were kids, Riku was known for his strength and agility. This is proven when Tidus tells Sora that even triple-teaming up against him with Wakka and Selphie, they were still defeated by him. Clearly, he is not only skilled with his keyblade, but in hand to hand combat as well, which is also demonstrated in 358/2 Days when he knocks down a charging Xion with one punch. Since the events of Dream Drop Distance, Riku is now a Keyblade Master, which basically means he's even more badass and puts him at Aqua's level of combat and magic abilities.
In this game, Riku's magic will unfortunately be nerfed, leaving him with just his keyblade and natural fighting abilities.
